Corfu History
Corfu is one of the most wonderfull islands of Greece, beeing in the NW borders of Greece makes it even more important due to the sea-connections that provides from Greece to Italy and the central Europe. Corfu was the home of many ancient mythical Kings like "Achileas" - King of the "Faiaks" and also "Alkinoos" - King of the first habitants coming from Peloponese. The island is mentioned many times from "Hommer" as "Sheria" and from "Apolonios the Phodian".
Some other names given to the island by other ancient travelers were: Gorgo - Keravnia - Kasopia - Argos - Faiakia and many others. It is not until the midle-age that the island gets its present name, "Corfu" by the Latins and "Kerkira" by the Greeks.

Ancient History and Myths The island of Corfu was inhabbited from the later "Stone-Age" when the island was then connected to the "Pindos Mountains" of central Greece, from when we have wonderfull speciments of stone tools and weapons, the continue to the "Bronge Age".
Because of its geographical place, Corfu gained the interest of many ancient Greek cityies with the first ones to be in place to be "Eretrieis" back in the 750B.C. At 734B.C. group of "Corynthians" with leader the "Hersicrates" went to the island and the island gets the name "Korkira" and the "Doric wrighting" is established. In the next century, Corfu becomes a great Sea Power in the western "Mediteranean sea". Because of that power, soon Corfu started competing the Corinthians who were the biggest merchents in the Mediteranean the same time, this conflict between those two cityies leaded to the first Sea-Battle between the Greek kingdoms that was recorded in 664B.C. when the Corfu won the Corinthians. |
